Love Handles are dangerous

Q: I'm 25 years old, and i'm starting to develop "love handles" around my waist. Is that okay for a guy my age? I hear the girls love it.

A: "Love handles" is a euphemism for belly fat - more precisely, the mound of fat on either side of your waist. Also known as beer belly, spare tire, or gut fat, they are actually dangerous to your health. Recent studies have shown that abdominal fat is linked to heart disease, stroke, diabetes, insulin resistance, gall bladder disease, some types of cancer, high blood fats, high blood pressure, and blood clotting abnormalities. Various tests such as BMI, skin-fold caliper, waist-to-hip ratio, and electrical impedance can be done to measure your body fat. However, the easiest way to find out if you fail the gut test is to look in the mirror. Or simply measure your waist girth. Vanity will settle any doubts you may have.

If your reflection strikes you as unflattering, or if you nearly run out of measuring tape, then better get started on a weight loss program by combining physical activity and diet. Doing a thousand sit-ups isn't going to do the trick. Smoking and stress aren't going to be of much help either.
